Babel is heart wrenching in its humanity, beautifully complex, breathtaking and brave in its love for languages, love and cultures in a book written in English, purposefully hopeful in its terrible honesty, like it won’t allow you to wallow in the nihilism that haunts the tragic nature of the story from the very beginning. it only partially feels like a story about martyrdom, for the sole fact it makes you sit until the very end to witness every ugly part, every pain, every scrap of final hope in its goodbye. Ultimately it’s what Kuang wrote also around the complex world of The Poppy War trilogy, a story about friendships drowned in history, doomed from the start. I would love to be able to express the million thoughts I have in my mind and heart now that I finished it
